British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he said. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
