Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to question certain rulings made by the official, following the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
